  Any root produced from a stem above the growing medium.  
     
Aerial roots are adventitious root produced along the stem above ground level. Aerial roots are commonly seen on many epiphytic plant. They usually do not enter the ground. Aerial roots often absorb ambient moisture and if the soil is too dry, they will reach out to grab as much moisture from the air as they need.
