Monocarpic  [ Botany  ]

Dictionary of botanic terminology - index of names

A plant that flowers and bears fruit only once and then dies.

A monocarpic plant is a plant that flowers and sets fruit or seed only once and then dies. The plant can live a few years or many years before it will flower.
Century plants (Agave) and yuccas (Yucca) bloom after 8-10 to 20-60 years or more and then die.
Flowering does not by itself result in the death of the plants as long as most of this plant sucker and produce offsets throughout their life and these remain to continue the lineage.
