  Pertaining to structures or organs that were well developed in an organism's ancestors but have become rudimentary during the course of evolution.  


Small or degenerate. Describes a characteristic of an animal or plant which has receded from a useful structure in an ancestral form that is now small, poorly developed, and/or non-functional., a remnant of a body part that existed in a former species of an organism. (Eg. Whales have tiny, vestigial hind legs buried deep in their bodies)
