  The characteristics distribution of spines, involving number of central and radial spines, colour, shape, dimension, arrangement, symmetry, which is often a distinguishing feature a of cacti and other succulents.  
     
There are several  terms used to describe the spination. The following are some of the more common terms:
Pectinate: Resembling the teeth of a comb.
Plumose: Feathery in appearance often from long dense pubescence.
