Juvenile specimens initially have short spines, but as the plants grow, they form completely thornless areoles. Adult specimens are completely nude and particularly beautiful. RARE!!!
Parodia scopa subs. succinea, best known as Notocactus succineus, is distinguished for its stems with abundant dark yellow central spines. The flowers are very showy, glossy yellow.
Notocactus magnificus v. warasii is a solitary or slowly clustering cactus imilar to Notocactus magnificus but with green surface (not bluish-green). This plant varies from specimen to specimen and produces big yellow flowers with a satin sheen.
Notocactus leninghausii v. setispinus is distingushed from the standard species by its harmless spines which are thiner, more softer to the touch and silky.
Notocactus claviceps is a smaller growing form of Notocactus schumannianus that does not exceed 50 cm in height. It has attractive light yellow (nearly white) flowers in summer.
Notocactus rechensis is a lovely dwarf species that branches strongly at the base and can form large clusters. The yellow flowers reach 3 centimeters in diameter.
As the name implies Notocactus purpureus is a distinct purple blooming form related to Notocactus horstii. The spines are red-brown, and flowers from ranges from bright pink to dark purple.
