Southern Madagascar in the area between Tsiombe and Taolanaro (Basin of the Mandrare River). Alluaudia ascendens is the tallest species up to 15 metres tall. It grows initially as a single stem, but then branches forming massive ascending V-shaped crowns. Leaves in spiralling lines, fleshy, circular or reverse heart-shaped, spines conical greyish-white.
