A small, globose geophytic cactus, typically olive-brown to gray, with a large taproot—hence the specific epithet napina, Latin for “turnip-like.” Spines are very short, black or horn-colored, and flattened against the stem. The silky flowers range from whitish/yellowish to pink or light brick-red.
