Among globular Frailea, F. pumila is one of the largest, growing up to 5 cm wide. Its pubescent spines, 1-5 mm long, are yellow-brown and hard to classify as centrals or radials. The contractile tuberous roots store nutrients for drought survival and anchor the plant.
