A rare geophyte cactus. The most vital part of the plant is its large, tuberous underground caudex, which serves as a reservoir for water and nutrients. Slender, cylindrical stems range from gray-green to reddish-brown and bear short, thin spines in a yellowish-brown hue. Each branch terminates in a glossy, silken copper-yellow flower.
